Performing &
Visual Arts Council

What is PVAC?
"PVAC" is an acronym for the Performing and Visual Arts Council, a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization based in Silsbee, Texas, which is dedicated to enhancing the education of students through the arts. Each academic year, PVAC brings theater productions, performing artists, visiting authors, professional storytellers, music and dance programs, and artisans of fine arts into local classrooms.
Purpose of PVAC
Our motto is "All arts for all
students." PVAC operates in
conjunction with the local public school administration to provide exposure to
culture and fine arts to students living in a rural community. A large
proportion of Silsbee students go nowhere the school bus or their own two feet
can't carry them. Our small, rural school district with a limited tax base must
focus on bricks and mortar and maintaining a well qualified faculty. It cannot
finance extensive arts education. Through grants, contributions, and
memberships, the programs presented by PVAC are free of charge to the students
at each campus. Our goal is to introduce the arts to students in
four areas: theater, music, visual arts, and literature/storytelling.
Studies have shown that knowledge of music enhances math skills and drawing or
painting can stimulate problem solving skills and cognitive thinking. TV and
video may be valuable teaching tools, but they are no substitute for an actual
theater experience or personal encounter with real people who make music, write
books, sculpt, paint, or design computer graphics. By
exposing students to the arts, PVAC hopes to play a small part in preparing our
students for the future.

History of PVAC
In the fall of 1986 a volunteer group of educators, parents, and civic leaders launched PVAC for the purpose of enhancing arts education within the Silsbee Independent School District. For more than 18 years, the Performing and Visual Arts Council has provided Silsbee students with many outstanding programs presented by highly trained artists and professional production companies.

Government
PVAC is governed by a board of directors which is required to meet five times a year: September, November, January, March,, and either May or June. The officers of the board are president, 1st and 2nd vice-presidents, treasurer, secretary, and program coordinator. The board is also comprised of a representative from the SISD school board, a faculty representative from each school in the district, and other interested citizens of the community.
